Volunteer Preliminary Application

Activities Assistant
Opening Date: On Going
HSI’s Clubhouse and Recovery Room in Oakdale is open to Washington County residents with mental and/or chemical health issues. Volunteers are needed on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the evening from 6-8pm. Volunteers are needed to do a wide variety of activities including fun projects, education, exercise and social interaction. We are open to your interests, ideas and talents. Examples include: • Lead an exercise class, craft class, game, music or singing group • Take a group on an outing or field trip; such as an art gallery or a park • Teach a second language or dancing • Share a talent or hobby • Serve food and beverages • Group and individual interaction • Other opportunities based on volunteer interests, ideas or talents

Adult Day Program Assistants
Opening Date: On Going
HSI’s adult day program, Circle of Friends, is designed for older adults and people with physical or mental impairments. Circle of Friends is located in Oak Park Heights in Washington County. This is an ideal program for adults, students during the summer or on school breaks and groups. This volunteer opportunity requests a 4 hour time commitment between the hours of 8:30 to 4:00 Monday to Friday. Participants enhance their quality of life through fun projects, exercise, education and social interactions. Volunteers are needed to assist with or lead a variety of activities. We are open to your interests, ideas and talents. Examples include: • Lead an exercise class, craft class, game, music or singing group • Serve food and beverages • Share a talent or hobby • Share a pet’s talents • Group and individual interaction • Other opportunities based on volunteer interests, ideas or talents

Church Escort Volunteer Companion

HSI is looking for a senior volunteer to pick up a senior at her home and escort her to St Andrew’s Lutheran Church on Sunday mornings. The senior lives in Pine Springs, goes to the 9:30am service and stays for the coffee brunch after services. This volunteer will need a vehicle and driver’s license and be available Sunday’s 9am – 1pm. A female in her 60’s who understands (or is willing to learn) how to deal with people who have dementia and are hard of hearing is preferred.

Lead Elder Exercise Group in Stillwater
Opening Date: On Going
HSI is looking for a person skilled in Senior Exercise to lead/assist/inspire a group of seniors who exercise three times weekly (Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 to 10:00). Standing and sitting exercises are done as there is no special equipment available on site. This person must have a good energy level, enjoy working with seniors, be at least 18 and be a self-starter.

The scheduling is flexible to meet your availability; one day per week, one day per month, one week per month, etc. This is an opportunity to interact with seniors and possibly fulfill a service learning or internship requirement. Flexible scheduling is available Monday – Friday.

Meals on Wheels Drivers - Forest Lake

A great need exists in Forest Lake in SEptember and October! The Washington County Meals on Wheels program is provided by the HSI Eldercare division. It is a non-profit service delivering hot nutritious noontime meals Monday through Friday (with extra meals available for weekends) and providing at least one personal contact each day. The program is designed for those who are homebound, age 60 and over or who are chronically disabled.

Meals on Wheels depends on volunteers to deliver the meals and one route can be completed within 60 – 90 minutes over the noon hour. Meals are distributed from a variety of locations in Washington County; a great need exists in Mahtomedi. Program staff is eager to work with volunteers’ interests and schedules – choose to deliver one day a year, a month or a week! Volunteer regularly or be on-call. This program is ideal for group volunteering (e.g. churches, businesses, community organizations, etc).

Volunteer drivers must be at least 18-years-old, have a valid driver's license, reliable vehicle with auto insurance and be able to carry bag of meals to car. Those over 55 may qualify for personal injury insurance while driving and mileage paid up to $15 per month. In addition to drivers, Meals on Wheels program seeks kitchen assistants that are 16-years or older to help the site manager package the meals for delivery (Mon – Fri from 8:30 – 11 am) and site greeters to ensure that meals are delivered (Mon – Fri from 10:30 – 11:30 am).

Seasonal & One Time Opportunities

Volunteers help HSI clients as needed with tasks throughout the year, such as moving furniture, turning a mattress, annual cleaning of air conditioner, carpet cleaning, light housekeeping, laundry, pet care, etc. We are open to your interests, ideas and talents.

Meals on Wheels in looking for on-call or fill-in drivers in Washington County.

We can accommodate a variety of ages, individuals, groups, families, short-term projects, and service learning and internship requirements.

Senior Shopping Volunteer
Opening Date: On-Going
HSI is seeking 2 or 3 adult volunteers (at least 18 year old) to assist seniors at a senior apartment to do personal shopping. This could include groceries, supplies or personal items dependent on needs at time. The volunteer(s) would be on call/as needed, need own transportation and willing to take senior if senior wants to go shopping. Ability to work with seniors and persons with disabilities is required.

Transportation Providers
Opening Date: On Going
HSI clients have an ongoing need for transportation to and from various appointments, support groups, activities, errands and meetings throughout Washington County. Many of these people are homebound and/or do not have the means for public transportation. As so many of us take for granted the convenience of our own independence, please consider helping HSI clients with their transportation needs.

The needs are for scheduled and on call transportation needs. Volunteer drivers must be at least 18-years-old, have a valid driver's license and reliable vehicle with auto insurance.
